THE FILM INDUSTRY

TASK 1
Read Kevin Maher (The Times film critic) on Trolls World Tour (Universal).
Use the case study to respond to the following 2 exam essays separately, so 2 paragraphs. Keep each to three or four crisp, factual sentences. Bonus points: refer to Netflix, disruption, your own film consumption.
Essay question 1: How far has digital technology changed patterns of distribution? (2015)
- universal released trolls to home media for audiences. There was a backlash from this however Universal didn't care and have since released another film via home media. Due to events like corona virus many theatrical runs have been cut short and numerous films were taken off the calendar and given new release dates
- Digital technology has a big change on distribution, streaming services like Netflix has caused a huge disruption as it is more accessible for consumers over cinemas.
- theatrical run, theatrical chain, home media
-Netflix is the disruptor. It has not merely closed the theatrical release window, but lobbed a brick through it

Use Universal's home media release of Trolls as an example and consider whether this is a trend (in studio behaviour) with studios copying the disruptive model of Netflix

Essay question 2: To what extent does audience behaviour determine changes in the media industry? (2015)

  1. Essay question 1: All good. Perhaps mention the views of Kevin Mayer, The Times film critic: that this signals the end of cinema. Follow this up with the evidence to the contrary (that cinema chains will try to stop the practice of direct home release: Universal faced a backlash when Cineworld and other chains threatened bans after Universal also released The High Note to home media. Then add comments on your own consumption.
